Outsourcing all or part of your marketing function is the ideal way to pick up the slack for marketing activities.
There are many benefits to outsourcing. From reduced overheads to gaining access to the latest industry technology and expertise are just a couple.
(You can read more about why you should outsource here).
Before looking into who you want to bring in, you need to understand why you need an agency. Take time to reflect on your business activities and what you believe is missing. Look at your KPI’s and your plans. List your long- and short-term goals. Pick some areas you want to improve.
Once you have an idea of why you need to outsource, it’s time to pick the right one, and this is not a decision you should take lightly. Like anything, there are good and bad third-party marketing services and agencies out there. To help you start your search, we have highlighted the best ways to find a marketing agency that’s right for you.
Now that you have an idea of what you want from a marketing agency, this will narrow down your search criteria. But it would be best if you still shopped around. Ideally, it would help if you considered looking at a few in detail before rushing into any commitment.
When looking at agencies, you will have companies with different values, attitudes and ways of working. You should choose an agency that shows similar values to your own to ensure a harmonious transition.
For example, you may be strong on communication and openness, so you should find an honest agency team, not afraid to kick you up the butt, and keep you in the loop of all activities.
When researching potential agencies, it’s a ‘no brainer’ that you should look into their expertise and the services they offer.
However, when looking at their services, always ask yourself:
- What can they do for me?
- What services will I need to meet my specific goals?
- How will they support my brand to grow?
- Can I trust them to take over my marketing?
- How does this agency compare to the other agencies I have looked at?
Some agencies may only focus on a particular marketing element, such as SEO (Search Engine Optimization) or social media marketing. Therefore, you may want to consider using more than one agency. One of our clients uses a few other agencies, including a video production expert. We then manage the relationships with the agencies for the client, creating a single point of contact for everybody.
Agencies can also market for a specific sector. For example, our sister company, Bike Marketing, is an outsourcing marketing agency for bike businesses. They are a full-service agency helping the cycle industry shift its marketing into gear. They have the skills and experience to market to bike enthusiasts and know the ins and outs of channel marketing. If you look around, you may be able to find an agency-specific to your industry.

Consider the price
Outsourcing is considered cost-effective compared to the cost of staff, software and training. But you still need to keep within your budget.
When using an agency, you need to look at what you can afford. Some marketing companies charge well over £100 an hour (unlike us, who only charge around £60 an hour), which may be too expensive for you. Some agencies will be willing to be more flexible around your budget and may be able to offer specific services for a reduced price. All you got to do is ask!
Marketing of the Marketers
An excellent way to see if an agency practices what they preach is by looking at their marketing activity. Have a dive into their website and social media to get a feel of their branding, copy and graphics. You can even review how you came across their company website. They must be doing something right if you are now researching their services.
Review their reviews
You’ve read what they say about themselves; now it’s time to read what others say about them. The best way to get a feel for how they work with their clients is by reading their reviews. Check out reviews on Facebook, Google and Trustpilot to see the ratings and the type of comments they receive.
Spot the difference between a one-off issue and an overall problem with the company by asking: ‘Do same themes keep appearing?’ if so, chances are, this is not a one-time thing.
Get on a Call
Chosen a few agencies to contact? Then request an introduction call.
On the call, they may supply case studies from past clients and even a mini-proposal for a campaign you plan to run. You can take the time to fully understand what they can do for YOUR business, how they will meet YOUR marketing needs and the results they can produce from YOUR campaigns.
You can also take this time to get a feel of the team and the actual people you will be working with. You need to vibe with them to truly get on the same page. It’s important to get along and form an open dialogue before agreeing to any further commitments.
